Encircling Spaces
Created specifically for the Rotunda Galleries at the Gibbes Museum of Art, Charleston, SC, 2005. Encircling Spaces responded to the airiness and sacred feeling of the Rotunda with its high ceiling, dome, large windows and arched doorways. Connections were made between the round architecture of man and the architecture of birds. Through the incorporation of natural materials and a floor covering of drop cloths there was the sense that nature had reclaimed the interior space. While setting up the installation several small rooms were discovered. Old doors with glass panes were placed over the original doorways so the viewer could view the "hidden" spaces.
